What is spirometry?

A respiratory gas analysis that is performed while the patient is at rest is referred to as a Spirometry. Means Spirometry important metabolic parameters can be recorded and evaluated. In addition to the basal metabolic rate - the number of calories burned at rest - the results of this analysis can be used to create individually tailored nutrition and training plans that lead to more effective training.

The measured values are taken via a breathing gas mask connected to a smart analysis device and only takes a few minutes. Trainers have the precise results of the respiratory gas analysis available immediately, eliminating the need for time-consuming calculations and giving them more time to respond to the wishes and needs of their customers.

Spirometry explained in detail

Breath gas analysis is considered the gold standard for determining a person's individual metabolic situation. If it is carried out at rest - either sitting or lying down - it is referred to as a Spirometry. Respiratory gas analysis under stress, on the other hand, is called spiroergometry.

In this video we look at the Spirometry. It serves the so-called Basal metabolic rate diagnosticsin which the energy metabolism is recorded at rest. Thanks to recent technical developments, the collection and evaluation of respiratory gas values is now very fast and precise - complicated calculations are no longer necessary.

How does the collection of respiratory gas values during spirometry work in detail? First, the test person is fitted with a breathing gas mask that is connected to a measuring device. The air breathed in and out is then analyzed in real time. Values such as the oxygen and carbon dioxide content, the respiratory minute volume or the respiratory rate per minute are recorded. It is crucial for the quality of the data collected that the test person breathes as evenly as possible and does not speak during the examination.

Conclusions can now be drawn about a person's current metabolism from the parameters collected. Of particular importance here is the basal metabolic rate, which indicates how much energy, measured in kilocalories, a person consumes per day at absolute rest. By evaluating the basal metabolic rate and the respiratory gas parameters collected in terms of sports and training science, it is also possible to draw conclusions about the composition of the food consumed, or more precisely: the proportion of fats, proteins and carbohydrates that are burned at rest.

Trainers can in turn derive training and nutrition recommendations from these findings. This also works with the support of a smart analysis device and an app that uses the measured data to immediately create individual suggestions for a diet that promotes fat loss and muscle building.

A professionally conducted respiratory gas analysis and a nutrition and training plan that is precisely tailored to the results of the respiratory gas analysis thus form the basis for more effective training, avoiding frustration and making success visible more quickly.
